5G Internet Doesn’t Mean 5 Gigabits

Not all internet connections are the same. Read below to understand how 5G Home Internet compares to fiber internet in terms of speed, reliability, and performance.

What is 5G Internet

When you hear the term 5G, you probably think of your cell phone. That’s because 5G is the wireless signal that helps your phone connect to the internet.

Today, some companies also use that same wireless signal to provide internet to your home. This is called 5G home internet.

The “G” actually stands for generation, not gigabits (Gbps). So, 5G means fifth-generation of wireless data technology.

Which One is Faster and More Reliable: 5G or Fiber

5G

5G home internet uses wireless signals from nearby cell towers, which means speeds can vary based on your location and network conditions. Because of this, providers advertise a range of expected speeds rather than one guaranteed speed. As of July 2026, Verizon says most 5G Home Internet customers can expect download speeds between 85 and 300 Mbps, while T-Mobile advertises typical download speeds between 133 and 415 Mbps. Your connection may also be affected by your distance from the tower, the number of people using the network, weather conditions, and obstacles such as buildings and trees.

Fiber

Fiber has almost no fluctuation in speed. That’s because factors that affect 5G, such as distance from a cell tower, network congestion, weather, and physical obstacles, do not impact fiber. If you sign up for a 500 Mbps fiber internet plan, you can expect 500 Mbps at all times.

Fiber also offers symmetrical speeds, meaning upload and download speeds are the same. For example, a 1 Gig fiber connection can provide up to 1 Gbps download and 1 Gbps upload speeds.
