October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, making it the perfect time to review your online safety habits. Simple actions like using stronger passwords, recognizing scams, and keeping your devices secure can help protect your personal information from cyber threats. Follow the seven steps below to stay safe in today’s digital world.
1. Use strong, unique passwords
Your password is one of the most important tools for protecting your accounts. Using a weak password or the same password for multiple accounts can put all of your information at risk if one account is compromised. Create a strong, unique password for each account by using a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using easy-to-guess information like names, birthdays, or common passwords such as “password123” or “admin.” Consider using a password manager to securely store and manage your credentials.
2. Avoid Phishing Scams
Cybercriminals often use fake emails, messages, and websites to trick people into sharing sensitive information like passwords or financial details. They may pretend to be a trusted person or organization to make their requests seem legitimate. Always verify the sender before responding, clicking links, or providing personal information, especially when a request seems unexpected or asks for sensitive details. When in doubt, confirm the request through an official website or a trusted contact.
3. Think before clicking links/attachments
Be careful when clicking on links or opening attachments, even if they appear to come from someone you trust. Cybercriminals can make fake messages look legitimate to trick you into visiting harmful websites or downloading dangerous files. Before clicking a link, hover over it to check the actual website address and make sure it matches the expected destination. If a message seems unusual or something feels suspicious, it’s better to avoid clicking and verify it first.
4. Keep software updated
Older versions of operating systems, apps, and antivirus programs may have security weaknesses that cybercriminals can take advantage of. Regularly install updates to fix these vulnerabilities and ensure your devices have the latest security features and protections.
5. Use antivirus protection
Use reliable antivirus software to protect your devices from malware, viruses, and other online threats. It helps detect and block harmful software before it can damage your system or compromise your information.
6. Avoid public WiFi for shopping and Banking
Public Wi-Fi networks, like those in coffee shops or airports, may not be secure and can put your information at risk. Cybercriminals can sometimes use these networks to steal sensitive data, such as passwords or financial information. Avoid making purchases or accessing online banking on public Wi-Fi whenever possible. Use a secure private network or a VPN to add extra protection when connecting to the internet.
7. Recognize secure websites
Before entering personal or financial information online, make sure the website is secure. Look for “https://” in the web address and a padlock icon in your browser, which indicates that your connection is encrypted and better protected.
